FROM THE STAGE TO THE SPOTLIGHT
Commercial dance is the style you see in music videos, commercials and during major concerts by artists such as Beyoncé and Dua Lipa
It is an energetic melting pot of styles such as Hip-hop, Jazz-Funk, Streetdance and sometimes Latin. Where Contemporary is all about emotion, Commercial is all about performance, appearance (attitude) and entertainment. It is often sleek, powerful and made to look good in front of a camera or audience.
LESSONS
Commercial Dance classes are all about performance, energy and charisma. You learn to perform choreographies tightly and precisely to the music, paying attention to timing, dynamics and flow. Every movement is given impact through the right attitude, expression and finish.
You will work on techniques such as isolations, sharp vs. smooth movements, lines and angles, and moving your whole body confidently. You will also learn how to use body language and facial expressions to make your dance even more powerful, so that you can really perform ‘for the audience’.
You also develop strength, stamina and coordination. You learn to switch quickly between different rhythms and styles, and get tools to choreograph with ease and confidence. In short: you build both physical skills and a professional performance attitude.
What kind of movements are you learning?
TEXTURES (Dynamics)
Most importantly in commercial: the ability to switch between movements very quickly. You learn the difference between ‘Sharp/Hard‘ (staccato movements) and ‘Smooth/Soft‘ (fluid movements).
Lines & Angles
Creating clear, geometric lines with your arms and legs (‘picture perfect’ moments), often inspired by Jazz and Vogue.
Insulations
Moving one body part while the rest is stationary. Think of a fierce Chest Pop (chest forward) or a quick Head Snap (turning head).
Hair Whips
Techniques to use your hair as part of the dance without getting dizzy.
The Strut
Walking with maximum confidence. The way you walk from point A to B in the studio is part of the performance.Schedule Week 41

Frequently asked questions
What do I wear to a Commercial class?
- Clothing: Wear something you feel comfortable in and can move around easily. Many students wear sweatpants or leggings and a T-shirt. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable in it.
- Shoes:Clean trainers (no outdoor shoes). Make sure your shoes do not streak on our white dance floor.
You can also do this lesson on socks.
Is Commercial the same as Hiphop?
No, Commercial is not the same as Hip-hop. Commercial borrows movements from Hiphop, but mixes them with Jazz and focuses more on the ‘picture’ and show factor than pure Hiphop technique.
Can I take the classes if I have never had this kind of class before?
You certainly can. For your trial lesson, choose a beginner's class. If you like the class, you can start a course the following week and you will see that you will master dancing a little better each week.
Do I need to be nimble?
To take Commercial classes, you don't need to be nimble.
How long does a lesson last?
A youth class lasts 60 minutes, while an adult class lasts 75 minutes.
Can I buy a single lesson?
Individual lessons can be purchased for adult classes. A course card is cheaper per lesson and also a good incentive to attend class regularly. If you miss a lesson, you may make it up at one of the other classes.
Can I take a different class every week?
This is possible but we recommend dancing along to the same class every week as much as possible, as you will be working on the same choreography for a few weeks at a time.
How often can I take a trial lesson?
You can take several trial classes until you find the right one to sign up for. This way, you can get to know different teachers and dance styles. We will be happy to help you plan an additional trial lesson.
You cannot take a trial lesson twice at the same lesson time.
What does a trial lesson cost?
A trial lesson costs €12.50. You can sign up for a trial lesson in three ways:
- on the website
- via email: info@wladimirstudios.nl
- by phone: 020 6274245
